哲学・思想文化論講座 Philosophy and History of Ideas

This graduate program provides students with a firm foundation in classical and contemporary philosophical texts, trains them to read these texts critically, and prepares them to investigate how philosophy and its historically related, neighboring fields continue their dialogue in the present world. The history of ideas sets the framework within which students explore various topics and methodologies in contemporary philosophy and consider their relationship to critical problems. Students develop these skills through coursework: They learn to pose original, critical questions, to discuss ideas clearly and logically, and to develop a reasoned argument. Our aim is to cultivate individuals capable of providing critical philosophical perspectives not only on traditional problems from the field but also on the urgent problems of today.

Civilizations of humanity have produced a variety of cultural and artistic phenomena, such as art, music, drama, cinematic art, architecture, horticulture, festivals, and entertainment. In this course we research and analyze these phenomena from three perspectives. Firstly, from the perspective of aesthetics we uncover the underlying thought of art. Secondly, using art theory we elucidate the cultural structure that supports creation. Finally, we explore art works from the viewpoint of both Western and Japanese art history. Unconstrained by conventional concepts of art, research is carried out into a wide range of contemporary cultural phenomena. We offer comprehensive education and research into the cultural phenomena of art, removing the walls dividing genres, regions, and era etc. in order to study mutual artistic influences and comparisons.
